St. Joseph is the earthly father of Jesus and the husband of the Virgin Mary. Joseph was a progeny of the family of King David. After the engagement with Mary, he found her already pregnant, and “being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public shame”, he decided to avoid her quietly, but an angel informed him that the child was the son of God and was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph obeyed the angel and married Mary. After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem of Judea, where the Holy Family received the wise men, an angel warned Joseph and Mary of imminent violence against the child by the Judean king Herod the Great, after which they fled to Egypt.
